Technology in home-based care is a necessity, but how can providers foster adoption among patients, caregivers and staff — and what are the benefits of doing so? In this blog, we explore the different angles of technology adoption, how providers can navigate lack of buy-in, and how the right technology can benefit everyone involved in the care journey.
Technology adoption among patients and caregivers
When speaking to adoption rates for collaborative communication technology, there’s not much evidence of major issues, especially for patients who are on long-term service. In fact, patients who are on service for longer than six months typically have higher adoption rates of the app itself — potentially due to having more opportunities to engage patients about the benefits of the technology. However, if a certain patient population is unwilling to download the app, having the capability of unlimited users helps because patients can have a family member or caregiver download it.
For patients without a smartphone, we can communicate with them through a secure SMS message or email link. This app-less technology is also enticing to shorter-term patients who don’t want the hassle of creating a username and password for a short period of time.
Technology adoption among staff
When technology is easy for patients to adopt, then it’s also easy for staff. One incentive for staff to adopt collaborative technology is that it helps them to avoid using their personal device — a benefit for staff who are fearful of giving out their personal number. If a staff member isn’t available to reply after hours, they can route messages to someone on call via the secure app.
It’s also a benefit for working toward HIPAA compliance, as it prevents patients from sending pictures or initiating a video chat with staff’s personal devices.
Technology adoption among consumers
While many people don’t consider healthcare to be a part of consumerism, patients expect the real-time communication that comes with any other service. They get that engagement in every other aspect of their daily lives, from food to entertainment, and healthcare is no different.
